The painting and some curiosities

What a fort to see and experience... the history that lies beneath, both metaphorically and literally!
Fort St. Angelo is located in Birgu, also know as Vittoriosa, one of Malta's historical Three Cities and it is the oldest fort in Malta. This fort was crucial during the Great Seige of 1565, defending the island during the most treacherous fights.

Originally built as a castle in the medieval period, named Castum Maris (castle by the sea), it was then rebuilt as a fort during the 1500s and later in 1690s reconstructed to what we see today. The fort has a mast and not only looks like a ship, in 1912 it was officially given the title of a naval frigate - HMS Egmont and in 1933 it was re-named HMS St. Angelo.
Beneath the fort lies what was once a prison, were amongst other prisoners there was also the famous artist Caravaggio. There are various inscriptions and designs made by the prisoners going back to 1530s. Be sure not to miss visiting this if you plan to visit this marvellous fort.
